Free Essays on Go Ask Alice
At the beginning of her Diary Number Two, or her ââ¬Å"new beginningâ⬠, Alice seems very sure that nothing bad could ever happen to her again. She writes about how her family is the greatest, how theyââ¬â¢re so sweet to her, and how much she loves them. She also exclaims, ââ¬Å"Boy have I ever messed up my life!â⬠and ââ¬Å"Crap, what an idiot I have been!â⬠She knows all this, but believes that this is a good time for a fresh start. At school, she feels completely left out, and sheââ¬â¢s getting depressed about it. Druggies wonââ¬â¢t talk to her (except for occasional name calling) because she refuses to begin using again. The rest of the school thatââ¬â¢s not involved in this wonââ¬â¢t speak to her either, because everyone knows what sheââ¬â¢s done. The druggies at school attempt to get her to start doing drugs again, however, she says no way. Included in this bunch is a girl named Jan who Alice used to be friends with. First, someone put a joint in her purse, and she got so upset that she left school and went to her dadââ¬â¢s office. Then, they put a burning roach in her locker, and she completely freaked out. Her only escape from all this is a guy named Joel, who goes to the university her father teaches at. Heââ¬â¢s a very nice boy, and they really like each other. War was the topic of nearly all conversations and sex and drugs were on everyoneââ¬â¢s minds. While boogie fever swept dance floors, young men were sent off to die in a war that they could never win. Richard Nixon was in office and his scandal was to influence politics for years to come. The bright blue bell-bottom pants with the pink and orange flowers sewed on were the coolest thingâ⬠¦oh excuse me, I mean the ââ¬Å"grooviestâ⬠thing to have. Big cars were the big thing and inflation was as ââ¬Å"highâ⬠as the teenagers smoking pot and shooting heroin. This was the 1970s. She probably would have thought President Nixon to be one of the biggest moron ever to live, and she most likely would have been out on the streets. Not living the life of an addicted druggie though, but rather counseling others on how to clean up their acts and get on with their live s. I think A! lice would have made a really good life for herself. Of course, these werenââ¬â¢t the only things going on during the seventies.
